At least 40 more contract workers at Invista’s polymer and resin plant in Wilmington are being laid off from their jobs due to a restructuring effort announced in March.
Mundy Maintenance, Services and Operations LLC, a subsidiary of Houston, Texas-based The Mundy Companies, notified North Carolina Commerce officials through a WARN notice on May 4 that the company will be terminating 40 employees in Wilmington. The layoffs represent 38 percent of Mundy’s 104 contract workers at the Invista site, according to Mundy human resources Vice President Ralph A. Beard.
Half of the affected employees are pipe fitters, welders and helpers. Other job positions affected include insulators, electricians, operations support, an equipment repair mechanic, a carpenter and a supervisor.
“This is the result of a curtailment in production at this Wilmington site,” Beard said. “When the owner is laying off workers, the contractor usually is too.”
Wichita, Kan.-based Invista had filed a similar WARN notice in March stating that it would be laying off 60 of its 285 employees at the Wilmington plant located at 4600 N.C. 421 North.
Invista spokeswoman Erica Taylor said at the time that the company was restructuring its manufacturing operations in Wilmington, which is its primary manufacturing facility in North Carolina for intermediates, polymers and resin products.
